Engineers are turning to ‘no-dig’ or ‘trenchless’ technologies to inspect, fix and replace pipes without the need for excavation. Insitu repairs are now established as durable techniques, most with track records close to thirty years. Some of the methods have been applied to over one million feet of pipe.
Find and Fix
Buried pipes are subjected to various forces, the most predominant being ground movement, chemical attack, tree root damage and accidental overloading. By putting remote cameras into pipe work, engineers are able to view and assess the state of repair work needed without actually digging up the surrounding areas to gain access to the pipe.
Excavating the area to gain access and then replacing the damaged pipe can sometimes take weeks. The development of no-dig technology means that, in some cases, entire sections of pipe can now be fixed in just half an hour.
Combined with these developments, new technologies will also allow other services to be installed in sewers, meaning they too could be serviced without the need for excavating.
